Day 34: Necklace for Soulmates (Philippine Revolution: Batalla de Calamba)

It's been a year since Andres Bonifacio was executed. Too bad, he started the first phase of revolution and didn't live to see the fruits of it. To think that he was executed for treason. However, there is light to this revolution since His excellency, Emilio Aguinaldo, just returned from his exile in Hong Kong.  They are preparing to decimate General Peña's troops.

Here in Calamba we are under General Paciano Rizal and Pio Del Pilar's command. It was the army of 500 rushed from manila to give aid to General Peña. The Spaniards wait until we could besiege the church. When we did, we realized that we are outgunned. We lack the guns and ammunition.General Paciano Rizal devised a plan.

"Evey time we fire an open column in the church, the men with no guns will light up firecrackers. Therefore, making an illusion that we have lots of firepower." General Paciano exclaimed. No one believed in this plan but it was the best we got. So we did it. Guns then fire crackers was all we did for a couple of days. The Spanish seems to fight back and some of our troops was going down. Even in a troop of 5,000 vs 500 you cannot assure the safety of everyone. I can only feel bad for the wives or lovers of these soldiers as they hold on to hope only to find their necklaces shattered.

The Spaniards fell for the trick and they surrendered a few days later. General Paciano Rizal wastes no time as he counterattacked the Spanish in his hometown. We felt powerful at that time. Although the same cannot be said to our fallen men. We are setting up the ambush in the vicinity, hoping to defeat the relief column.

There is something that bothers me though. My necklace has been glowing on and off ever since the victory over the siege of the church. I've been tasked to guard the prisoners we captured. Until I found out why.Another soldier has his necklace glowing yellow too. It was really awkward since we're both guys and we're both straight. It was really awkward and the other soldiers teasing us. We shook it off and proceed to work.

Every day and every night soldiers are shifting shifts since we should be ready for every attack. One victory does not ensure the safety of the people. We were sleep deprived but we continue. The food was going scarce and most of us are not in fighting form.

I talked with the soldier who also has a glowing necklace. His name was Erik. We went for a chat at night and he seems like a great guy. We talked about his dreams and aspirations. I kinda liked him though. I just don't understand how two straight guys are considered soulmates. I just talked to him as a friend and went along with it.

"I never actually had a real friend before, Everyone just use me since I'm one of the rich kids in the barrio" he said. "I joined the revolution not just to make friends but also to liberate the country that was my home. You see, all of my life I never gave a damn who my soulmate was because my family gave me the love I needed. However, meeting you made this necklace glow." He added. I didn't know what to answer so I just patted him at the back. "How about you, What's your story?" he asked.

"I was a son of a housewife and a soldier. My father was a womanizer which left my mother crying most of the times. I hated my father after that and swore that I would never hurt the future part I have. Ha ha, Looks like you're the one huh" I answered.

The moon was full and the wind was cold.  The stars was gazing upon us and We couldn't help but look at each other's eyes. My heart was beating fast, I didn't looked at his gender nor appearance. I looked at his soul and closed my eyes. He followed suit and did the same. We kissed under the shower of stars.

At the break of dawn we  captured Spaniards and caused casualties. We liberated Calamba and stopped the relief column for General. Peña. We heard the he surrendered at the battle of Alapan and Cavite was liberated at may 31 of teh same year. Western parts of Laguna was cleared until the whole province of Laguna was liberated it ensured the victory of Filipinos.

Meanwhile, I retired after the Battle of Calamba and retired as farmer with my husband.
