Sebastian's Luck (Part 2: Rebecca's Longing)

It has been a year since I transferred in this university since I was looking for a friend of mine long ago. The process was long and tedious but I finally made it.

It was fine, adjusting to the university life. My previous school is just an ordinary college with the sections being per block, it felt more of a high school setting but here the classes are jeepneys apart that you get to know a lot of people who are unique in their own ways, I had this one classmate who has like seven different colors on his hair and a lady with a really pretty big blue eyes. There is one who loves to stand out and one wears anime cosplay to class everyday. Weird is different but it’s cool and nice.

Coming here, I only had one companion: Hector. He was a stray cat my brother found a year ago. His head was bleeding due to a kid throwing rocks at him saying “Bad luck! Bad luck!” My brother shushed the kid away as he grabs the cat and brought it home. My father was reluctant to take Hector because cats are smelly and furry but through time he grew quite fond of him, more than me and my brother I would say.

Transferring in this university makes it also easier to get home since we practically live inside the campus with my father serving as the professor.

I said that I was looking for a friend but I never really had any luck finding him.

“Maybe it’s the cat” Paulo, a classmate of mine, said

Hector hisses on him and humped on his face but luckily I was able to get a hold of him.

Scolding him for blaming Hector, Paulo looked away as I was speaking.

“Do you like him?”

“Huh?” my heart raced and my body felt hot as he asked me.

“The guy you’re looking for”

“No!” I said as I picked Hector up.

“Sure”

“He’s just, really special you know. He saved me a lot during our elementary and highschool days. But we kind of fell apart..”

Paulo is not one to read the room so he kept pushing me. Hector was getting infuriated with him until.

“Slam!”

Another groupmate of ours, Catherine, slapped Paulo’s face with a white envelope.

“Learn to take a hint idiot” she said grabbing the two cartolinas. “If a girl doesn’t want to talk to you, take a hint!” She followed as she barrage him with cartolinas.

The group leader got furious for the broken supplies so he tasked the two to buy some more. They came back butting heads and due to hatred to one another they competed to see on who will finish more task. This came to an advantage for the group as we finished the task sooner than expected. Meaning tomorrow I could search for my friend even more.

Next day, Catherine accompanied me to look for my said friend, but first we hang out in the student lounge. Paulo came along too but instead of looking for him they just butted heads.

I told him what he looks like. Tall, fair, short haired and wears glasses.

“Oh great we narrowed it to half of the human population” Paulo said

“It was years ago, cut her some slack”

“Have you tried facebook?”

“Yeah, but he’s not responding to my messages”

“That’s easy so he’s not like off the grid or something”

“A lot just happened, one day he just can’t recognize me”

“Like literally?”

“Yeah, one day he can’t just recognize me”

“Did something happen?”

“No one bothered to explain to me”

Paulo was to ask more questions but Catherine lightly pinched her arm.

Standing up I went to get an ice tea at the counter, I saw a guy moping and chomping down hot dogs. His friend was waving me away, saying I should not look as he gets conscious.

Hector jumped from Catherine’s arms and went to my foot as he rubbed his paws on me. When I grabbed the cup Hector pointed his paw at the same boy I saw eating earlier. He was choking as his friend frantically look for beverages. I took a sip at my ice tea and gave it to him. Gulping it hard, I was barely recognizing his face as he puts down the cup. About to introduce myself, Hector immediately ran away chasing another cat in the lounge all the way to the park.

“Thank you!” his friend said.

Putting my hand in the air for a thumbs up I gave Hector a chase. My two companions did also. We were not able to catch Hector and for a week we were frantic about it. My father and brother got mad while my mom sighed relief that the one furrying her couch is gone.

A week later, I sat by the bench after putting up some poster of Hector missing. The guy behind me was mumbling so much but he seems to be in pain to so didn’t mind. I looked behind and

“Hector!” I cried

I recognized the face of the man mumbling behind him, It was the same man in the lounge and the one I am looking for. He reached out his hand and said:

“Sebastian”

It pains me to say that he did not recognize me back.
